Emmys Fashion Preview
An argument can be made about the societal value of television from cultural, anthropological and education perspectives (not always successfully but we do try). Similar arguments can be made in for the value of high fashion as art and as a cultural touchstone.
Almost no one would try to suggest that fashion at the Emmys or watching Giuliana Rancic for several hours could be served by either of those arguments. And that’s just fine. Sometimes I like my TV fluffy.
I care about award show fashion. It is a major draw for me to watch and enjoy the televised program. The awards themselves are certainly important – but if that was the only thing that I cared about, I’d just wait for the press release.
Here are, in no particular order, some things I love about Emmys Fashion. All pictures are from the 2013 Emmy Red Carpet.
You develop a bond watching child actors mature on screen. Watching young actresses mature through their fashion choices is a fun chance to glimpse at their personalities as women outside of their characters. Ariel Winter (Modern Famiiy) and Kiernan Shipka (Mad Men) are always fun to watch.
Differentiating the person from the character can be challenging for even the most seasoned TV viewer. It is especially challenging when performances are particularly strong. Watching Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) and Julianna Margulies (Good Wife) is always immersive – seeing them out on the town in finery of their choosing (or at least their stylists’) is a nice glimpse behind the curtain.
Sometimes its just fun to see pretty, happy people dressed in pretty things. Kelly Osborne (E! Fashion Police) and Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) are always good for that.
I don’t watch much fashion runway. Awards shows are my chance to see the new trends in structure, color and fit. The red carpet gives me the opportunity to see just how far my tastes – and my wardrobe – stray from today’s trends. Rocsi Diaz (Entertainment Tonight) and Linda Cardellini (Mad Men) looked particularly amazing last year.
What are you looking forward to on the carpet this year?
